Geotextiles

Geotextiles are permeable fabrics made from polypropylene, polyethylene or polyester used in constructions, being in contact with the earth or other materials. They can be classified by the manufacturing manner, in the following categories: woven, nonwoven (mechanical or thermal reinforced), thermally bounded and special.

The geotextiles can be used with the following functions:

  1. Filtration
  2. Separation
  3. Drainage
  4. Protection
  5. Reinforcing
  6. Container

1. With role of filtration and separation, the geotextiles are used:

  1. between the layer of aggregate and soil at the roads and railways’ foundations
  2. between the foundation soil and the body of dams and embankments
  3. at the different types of constructions: retaining walls, draining tubes in granular layer wrapped in geotextile

2. With drainage role, the geotextiles are used at:

  1. drainage systems of various constructions: dams, retaining walls, roads, landfills
  2. drains, in order to accelerate the consolidation

3. With protection role, the geotextiles are used :

  1. to protect the geomembranes or other materials against static or dynamic perforation.

4. With reinforcing role, the geotextiles are used:

  1. at the retaining walls executed from reinforced soil
  2. at the execution of roads, railways and embankments

5. Container role :

  1. consolidation and banks protection
  2. protection of the underwater foundations
  3. execution of dams
  4. coastal protection.
