Gabions are manufactured from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches.

Wire is from soft steel and is zinc coated in three variants:

  • double-galvanized wire with a quantity of 240 - 290 g Zn /m2 depending on the wire's diameter,   by passing wire twice through the Zinc bath according to EN 10244-2.
  • wire with galfan protection (mischmetal from Zinc + 5% Aluminium)
  • wire with double protection, galfan and polymer.


Gabions or mattresses from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches are manufactured in a wide range of standard sizes that permits an easy paneling of the structure and combinations for the standard sizes in order to obtain whatever dimension required by the project.






All gabions and mattresses have selvedge wires with minimum diameter of 1.4 bigger than wire's diameter of the mesh. The wire has a service life between 60 and 80 years depending on the type of protection, till the chemical agents pass the protective coat. The wire's diameter must have tolerances between 0.05 and 0.07 mm depending on wire diameter.

The advantage of the selvedge wires is obvious especially at the works executed in river beds with continue erosion where mattresses can easily cover the section of the channel's profile.

Gabions from wire mesh with hexagonal stitches have inner diaphragms from metre to metre in order to increase the gabion stiffness and to increase the elasticity for overall gabions structure. The dimensional tolerances for gabions are 5% on each direction and for mattresses 3% on length and width and ±2.5 cm on height.

Gabions and mattresses are provided with lid for any size.

The wire resistance is of minimum 350 - 550 N/mm2 and the elongation of the wire must be minimum 9% from the wire's diameter for a sample of 25 cm length, according to EN 10223-3

The wire mesh with hexagonal stitches has three kinds of dimensions for the mesh stitch.

The representative opening size of mesh is its width « D » that due to the hexagonal form is smaller than the height « H ».

Wire must be double twisted, thus increasing the resistance as well as the elasticity of the mesh. Due to the double-twisted mesh, the unweaving of the entire mesh is prevented in case of local rupture.
